President Muhammadu Buhari names Demola Seriki as Chairman of MAN, Oron Governing Council.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a Governing Council for the Maritime Academy of Oron, Akwa Ibom State. The 4-man Council is headed by Demola Seriki as Chairman. Other members of the Governing Council include Taiwo Tayo Ibitola(SAN), Hon Garba Jiji and Alh Sale Kudiawa. The Maritime Academy of Nigeria has been without a Governing Council since the inception of the present administration. With this appointment, the Interim Management Council of the Academy headed by Aare Adebayo Sarumi is expected to wind up. Mr Seriki who hails from Lagos State belongs to the ruling All Progress Congress. He was appointed Minister of State Defence in 2009 before defecting to the APC. THE Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has cancelled the promotion examination recently conducted for senior officers from the rank of Assistant Comptroller to Deputy Comptroller over irregularities noticed in the conduct of the examination. The Comptroller General of the Service, Col Hameed Ali (rtd), according to an internal circular, ordered the cancellation of the recently conducted promotion examination for officers moving from the rank of Assistant Comptroller to Deputy Comptroller over alleged malpractices. Some 124 ships out of 227 ships broken in the third quarter of 2017 ended up on beaches in South Asia for dirty and dangerous breaking, the latest report from NGO Shipbreaking Platform shows. A total of 42 ships were sent for demolition to Turkey, 35 to China, and 26 were scrapped in the rest of the world. Shipowners continue to sell their tonnage to infamous beaching yards in South Asia as it brings in more money. As explained by the Platform, there is little or no investments in proper infrastructure to contain pollutants and ensure safe working conditions, the proper disposal of hazardous wastes is overlooked, and migrant workers are exploited.
