Governor Douye Diri has approved the implementation of the N30,000 New Minimum Wage adjustment for pensioners and other retirees in Bayelsa who were not captured when the policy came into effect. Over six thousand retirees are involved in this consequential adjustments to reflect current economic realities. This development is in fulfilment of a promise made by Governor Diri during the 2023 Worker's Day Celebration, following the submission of a report by an implementation committee headed by the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Alabo Gideon Ekeuwei. Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in a judgement delivered on Monday, disqualified the Bayelsa State All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the November 11 governorship election, Chief Timipre Sylva. Justice Okorowo ruled that Chief Sylva having been sworn in twice and ruled for five years as governor of Bayelsa would breach the 1999 constitution as amended if allowed to contest again. The judge also declared that Sylva was not qualified to run in the November poll because if he wins and is sworn in, he would spend more than eight years in office as governor of the state.
