3 Medical Students Confirmed Dead in boat mishap in Calabar….

The National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA has confirmed that three medical students lost their lives in a boat mishap which occurred weekend in Calabar, Cross River State. The deaths which were confirmed by Engr Stanley Onuoha, Calabar Area Manager of NIWA, revealed that no fewer than 14 medical students who were on their annual conference were onboard the Passport 19 pleasure boat when the accident occurred. A statement by NIWA spokesman, Jubril Darda'u, explained that Safety and security measures were thrown to the wind as both the jetty and the boat which was used for the cruise had no prior approval and certification by NIWA. The League of Maritime Editors (LOME) on Monday advised the administration of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu against the proposal to merge the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) as one single agency to be known as the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS). Niger Delta leader and ex-militant, Mujahid Asari Dokubo, has alleged that a large chunk of oil theft perpetrated in Nigeria can be traced to the Nigerian military. The Management of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is deeply saddened by the Boat mishap that occurred on 12th June, 2023, along the Jebba Lake channel in the Lafiagi-Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State in which about 103 passengers are feared to have died. We condole with the families of those that have lost their loved ones, and are particularly concerned with the huge number of casualties. This accident was clearly an unfortunate and avoidable one. Preliminary investigations through our Area Manager in Minna/Kwara Area Office revealed that the boat driver and wedding guests were on the ill-fated voyage about 2:30am, which speaks volumes about the disregard for the laws regulating Inland Waterways navigation.
