Bayelsa To Give First African Harvard Graduate, Ekpebu, State Burial

Intellectual icon and first African to graduate from the prestigious Harvard University in the United States, Ambassador Lawrence Baraebibai Ekpebu, will be given a state burial by his home state of Bayelsa. Prof. Ekpebu, who also attended another Ivy League institution in the United States, Princeton University, hailed from Okoloba Community in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area. Ekpebu, who was Nigeria's former Ambassador to the Ivory Coast, died at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa on January 2 at the age of 90. Bayelsa State Government has pledged to provide land for the proposed establishment of an Anglican university in the state. Governor Douye Diri made the pledge in response to a request by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has offered scholarship to another first class law graduate from the state, Miss Pere Esther Amazige. Miss Amazige, who graduated from the Rivers State University in Port Harcourt, is the second female Law graduate to bag the scholarship after Miss Ebizi Eradiri that had a double First Class at the Niger Delta University and the Nigerian Law School. Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has set up a special committee to look into the demands of the Association of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Niger Delta University (NDU) chapter as well as that of the Higher Institutions Joint Action Committee  (HIJAC) in the state in order to address them. The Federal University, Otuoke (FUO), Bayelsa State, will, on Septem 21, hold its maiden convocation ceremony for 1,121 graduands, with 72 of them in First Class category. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Seth Accra-Jaja, who disclosed this at a news conference on Thursday at Otuoke, said the event was part of the activities marking the maiden convocation ceremony of the institution. He said out of the 1,121 graduands, 72 will be awarded first class, 462, second class upper, 503, second class lower and 84, third class degrees. “The ceremony would be a combined convocation of students who graduated during the last three academic sessions of the university,” he said.
