The newly appointed Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Retd Navy Comm.Daju Effedua said in Lagos Monday that he was effectively in charge as Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria , Oron, Akwa Ibom Stste .
The Rector who denied claims that he was a stooge to the Adebayo Sarumi led Interim Management Committee, IMC said “what you don’t know is the fact that I am also a member of the IMC. You must agree with me that government acted in the best interest of the Academy, look at the pedigree of members of the IMC and you will agree with me that we have the best hands on board”, he said .
Commander Effedua also dispelled rumours that fresh admissions into the Academy had been suspended for two years. ” What we did was to suspend admission for one academic session based on the facilities on the ground which was by far inadequate to accommodate new intakes”. The Rector explained that the Academy under his watch will be positioned to meet with best global maritime institutions.
On the proposed conversion of the Academy to a University, the Rector explained that it was the thinking of the IMC to make the institution a degree awarding institution with all its faculties and courses intact so that the Academy does not lose focus of its core functions as a Maritime Academy, he concluded .
