Press Release
The battle of who regulates all activities on Nigerian inland waterways between lagos state government and the Federal government came to an end on Friday in Abuja as the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the federal government and its inland Waterways regulatory agency, National Inland Waterways Authority( NIWA). Honourable Justice Okoro, in a landmark judgment delivered yesterday, January 5th, 2024, validated an earlier federal High Court ruling, FHC/CS/ 543/ 2012, which pronounced NIWA as the authentic authority over Nigerian inland waterways and advised lagos state government and its agencies and any other states in the country to stay away from regulatory activities on Nigerian inland waterways. The Management of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is deeply saddened by the Boat mishap that occurred on 12th June, 2023, along the Jebba Lake channel in the Lafiagi-Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State in which about 103 passengers are feared to have died. We condole with the families of those that have lost their loved ones, and are particularly concerned with the huge number of casualties. This accident was clearly an unfortunate and avoidable one. Furthermore, for a wooden boat to have allegedly be...

NIWA set to move containers from Lagos to Onitsha Port

Port News, Press Release
In an effort to make Onitsha River Port functional, and to decongest the Lagos Ports, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is to engage the services of Akewa Colmar Terminal Limited (ACTL) to move containers from Lagos Ports to Onitsha River Port via Burutu Port in Delta State. The idea of hauling containers via Burutu Ports to Onitsha River port is to deliberately avoid the two small bridges of Gbarekolo and Bumandi.  Because the two bridges are too tiny and shallow for sea moving badges or vessels to ply through, that is why the company (ACTL) is considering the route from Lagos Ports to Burutu Port then to Onitsha River Port as final destination. The Managing Director of NIWA Chief Dr. George Moghalu disclosed that NIWA is targeting about 1,000 containers to be hauled per ...
