Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, has called for a comprehensive action in Nigeria's bid to be elected into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, as he inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to promote the campaign. Speaking at the inauguration held at the Boardroom of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy (FMMBE) in Abuja on Tuesday, Oyetola said the campaign must be all-inclusive, taking into consideration diplomatic and operational strategies in soliciting votes to yield good dividends. Nigeria, through the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Republic of Korea today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of cooperation in the field of Maritime Security and Safety. The Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh signed on behalf of NIMASA while the Director General, International Affairs and Intelligence Bureau, Korean Coast Guard, Seonggi Kang signed on behalf of     Korea. The organisers of the award, the Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre (PPRAC), said Dr. Jamoh was honoured for his giant strides in repositioning the Agency with initiatives that had inspired tremendous positive change in the maritime sector. The Governing Board of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has approved the appointment of three new Directors, Mr. Eric OJI, Mr. Dimowo Heaky, and a former spokesman of the Agency, Mr. Isichei Osamgbi. Nigeria’s Alternate Permanent Representative at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Mr. Dirisu Abdulmumuni, was promoted to Deputy Director, alongside 61 others.  Two hundred and thirty-three other staff were elevated to their next grade levels. Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have initiated joint efforts to close gaps identified by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) during its last mandatory audit of the country’s maritime industry.     The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has said the country is taking proactive steps to address its exposure to the threat of ballast water because of the high tanker traffic in its waters. Director General of the Agency, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, stated this in Lagos at the 10th Meeting of the National Taskforce (NTF) on Implementation of Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention, 2004. Jamoh said, being an oil producing country, Nigeria was prone to the effects of harmful aquatic organisms transported across regions by tankers.
