Oyetola ‘ s April 15 Declaration and the Fate of Nigerian Shipowners

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the April 15 declaration by Chief Adegboyega Oyetola, Nigeria's Marine and Blue Economy Minister, ordering the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, to immediately commence the disbursement of Cabotage Vessel Finance Fund, CVFF. Coming 14 days after April Fools Day, this does not appear to me as an April joke. It sounds so real to me, even though I am still evaluating the context under which the 10 paragraph press statement signed by, Bolaji Akinola, Oyetola's newly appointed Media and Communications Advisor, was made. Was it a coincidence that this declaration coincided with the day Oyetola was being conferred with the Marine and Blue Economy Pacesetter by Maritime Media Ltd, organisers of the Maritime Merit Industry Mer...

In what appears as bold move to nip in the bud the recurring incidents of boat mishaps in our Waterways, Nigeria's Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola, has inaugurated a Special Committee which is charged with the responsibility of reducing, if not completely eliminating the scourge. Headed by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Mr Bolaji Oyebamiji, the Committee has the responsibility to ensure that our Waterways are safe and secure in line with the theme of the 2024 World Maritime Day which is " Navigating the Future: Safety First ". Oyetola in a strong message to the ommittee charged them to come up with ways and means that will guarantee that Nigeria's Waterways are the safest and most secure in the West and Central African ...

"Mr President, please have mercy". This refrain was made popular by a Bishop who on January 20 officiated at the inauguration National Prayer Service of President Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. She could barely control her emotions as she pleaded with the then incoming President to have a human face and allow the fear of God to guide him in the way and manner he will govern America in his second coming, obviously drawing inference from his campaign threats, especially about his planned crackdown on illegal immigrants. This is the same prayer maritime stakeholders are taking to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to "have mercy" on an industry that rightly deserves a State of Emergency, after it was announced that only a paltry N12 billion was approved for the Minist...

Marine and Blue Economy Minister, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola, will today in Abuja inaugurate a high powered ministerial committee as Nigeria pushes for a seat in the International Maritime Organization, IMO. The inauguration of the Committee is coming in the wake of calls by critical Stakeholders who have described the move as a waste of time and scarce resources. Although the terms of reference of the Committee was still skirchy as at press time, usually dependable sources at the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy told our correspondent that the the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Oloruntola Olufemi, would lead the Committee of "Wise Men" who have been given a marching order by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to return Nigeria to Category " C" of the IMO .Other members of the Commit...
