These goods remain in the terminal until they are either re-exported or cleared for domestic use, at which point the necessary duties and taxes are paid. Essentially, it's a designated area for the temporary storage of imported goods, allowing businesses to defer duty payments. Much Ado About the N12trn Customs 2025 Target. By Asu Beks.

Nigerians were jolted early in the year by a N12trn Target slammed at the Nigeria Customs Service by the National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance. Smarting from an impressive N5.07tr target in 2024 which it surpassed by over 20 per cent, the Service was given N6.5tr as its target for 2025. But during the budget defence session in January, the Joint Committee on Appropriation, in its wisdom raised the figure by almost 100 per cent. The Committee claimed that available data from the budget office indicated a huge potential that a N12trn annual target in 2025 was achievable. This position drew criticism from experts and the organised private sector. Experts have expressed concern that the N12trn target could impact negatively on the trade environment. The contention is that increased r...

Frank Onyeka: A Breath of Fresh Air at Tin Can Customs. By Asu Beks.

Frankly speaking, Frank Onyeka, the new Customs helmsman at Tin Can insists his mission at his new duty post is not any different from the vision and mission of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi. Since his appointment as Comptroller General of Customs, Adeniyi has not compromised on professionalism and excellence. His watch word has been hard work ,and more hard work ,without compromising trade facilitation and standards. Onyeka faces a daunting task surpassing the record he met on ground, but according to him, this was not going to be contest between him and the immediate past Customs Area Controller, Dera Nnadi, who has just been promoted to the rank of an Assistant Comptroller General, but that of building on the legacies left behind by his predecessor. Said he:...

In life, there are those who are born leaders. There are also those who have leadership positions handed over to them. And yet, those who got groomed for leadership roles. Customs Comptroller General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, does not fall into the first category, neither is he in the class of those who had leadership position thrown at him. Those who have monitored his meteoric and outstanding career progression in the Nigeria Customs Service would agree with me that Wale Adeniyi, as he is fondly called by his friends, did not just get to the peak of the service by any stroke of luck. He worked for it. He merited it. As a young officer, he was a toast of his bosses, due essentially to his ability to deliver, and promptly too. Other than being a fast learner, his humane and humble dispos...
