All is now set for the second edition of the Senator Heineken Lokpobiri Unity Football Cup Tournament. A total of 47 clubsides drawn from all the 8 Local Government Areas of Bayelsa State are expected to battle for honours in the competition, which is scheduled to kick off on the 9th of November, 2025. In the draws held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital on Monday, the 47 teams were drawn into 8 centres for the preliminary round of the annual tournament. Bayelsa State Government has said reports of the state-sponsored football team, Bayelsa United, signing a new shirt sponsorship deal with Halkin Exploration and Production Limited for the rest of the 2023/24 Nigerian Professional Football League season were embarrassing. The government said it neither approved nor endorsed such a deal for the team in the ongoing football season. Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, yesterday made a surprise visit to the camp of the state-owned female football team, Bayelsa Queens, to motivate the players. Not impressed with the state of facilities, Governor Diri directed the immediate relocation of the players from the camp to a more suitable place pending the provision of a permanent camp. A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted him as saying the state government will take steps to provide a befitting permanent site for both Bayelsa United and Bayelsa Queens.
