Breaking News, Opinion, Politics, Press Release
The Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has condemned the arrest of activist Omoyele Sowore. Mr Sowore, a presidential candidate in the last election, was arrested on Saturday for calling for a revolution against poor governance. “Beyond the word ‘revolution, another much mis-used and misunderstood word, nothing that Sowore has uttered, written, or advocated suggests that he is embarking on, or urging the public to engage in a forceful overthrow of government,” Mr Soyinka said. He compared the actions of the security agencies that arrested Mr Sowore to what happended during the tenure of the late dictator, Sani Abacha. “We underwent identical cynical contrivances under the late, unlamented Sani Abacha, when he sent storm-troopers to disrupt a planning session for a similar ac...

BUSINESS-AS-USUAL CABINET WITHOUT ABUJA INDIGENE’

Breaking News, News Feature, Opinion, Politics
Inside Stuff With MARTINS OLOJA It is his privilege to nominate anyone he likes. It is our right to examine the nominees and have our say. But as chief executive of the federation, he will have his way. In the same vein, it is still our responsibility as citizens to return our verdict on the quality of the cabinet this brand new senate will certainly clear tomorrow. The President of the Senate as a candidate, pledged that the senate he would preside over, would not be a ‘rubber-stamp’. Indeed, he has set the tone for the kind of senate he will lead with the just-take-a-bow-and-go’ standard that has just been set. I understand the president’s men are smiling (not to the bank please) that Senator Bukola is not even in the senate to ask why portfolios were not attache...

Nigeria may witness a return to fascism and a relapse to ethnic favoritism if one of the Ministerial candidates emerges as the next Minister of Defense, Apapa Oodua Koya, (AOKOYA) warned in a statement issued on Wednesday. According to the Pan Yoruba group in the statement signed by Col Abimbola Sowunmi (rtd) the selection of General Bashir Magashi as a Ministerial nominee is “a very bad omen for Nigeria.” The group defined him as a ‘notorious ethnic champion who wishes to see Nigeria shaped in the image of his own Fulani hegemony. AOKOYA said the group is in possession of confidential information indicating that Magashir will eventually emerge as the country’s Minister of Defense. “We caution the Senate to look at the background of General Magashi. His records show fascism and n...

Boris Johnson set to be UK Prime Minister on Wednesday

Breaking News, News Feature, Politics
Boris Johnson has been elected leader of Britain’s ruling Conservative Party after defeating his rival, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt. Theresa May became Tory party leader in 2016 but has failed in her most important task - to deliver Brexit. The party’s 160,000 members have now voted for a new leader to replace her. The former Mayor of London, famous for his mop of blonde hair and political and linguistic gaffes, promised Tory members he would deliver Brexit before 31 October, despite a seemingly interminable stalemate in Parliament. Mr Johnson won 92,000 votes, compared to 46,000 to Mr Hunt. Mr Johnson will replace Theresa May in 10 Downing Street later on Tuesday, 23 July, and will set about reshuffling his Cabinet. MNA/SPUTNIK

Ministerial list received by the Senate from President Muhammadu BUHARI

Breaking News, News Feature, Politics
The name of the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, Hadiza Bala Usman, who was being tipped for a Ministerial Appointment, was conspicuously missing in the 43 names nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari. Unlike during his first term when he appointed only 36 ministers — one per state — he has decided to also appoint one per geo-political zone, bringing the total to 43, TheCable understands. The list was sent to the senate on Monday evening via executive communication and is expected to be read on the floor of the senate on Tuesday. The senate, which will be proceeding on a two-month recess on Thursday, is expected to screen the nominees. Contrary to speculations, only about 12 ministers will be re-appointed from the former cabinet. Meanwhile, the senate pre...

‘BUHARIWATCH: OUR PRESIDENT IS PROCRASTINATING AGAIN’

News Feature, Opinion, Politics
Inside Stuff With MARTINS OLOJA This is not a time for sycophancy and political correctness. Nor is it a time to hide some truth in a grave. It is a time to shout it to the nation and the ruling party big men that our president is procrastinating again! So, this is not healthy for Nigeria, a country that a whole continent and indeed the Black race have been waiting for, as a source of pride, inspiration and confidence. This is also a time to repeat a classic in which Winston Churchill in the late 1936 warned in the House of Commons, ‘The era of procrastination, of half measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays is coming to its close. In its place we are entering a period of consequences’. Oh yes, this is a time to lament the procrastination, half measures, soothing...
