Why My Administration Focused On Education – Jonathan *Lauds Gov. Diri’s First Year Performance

Misc
Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has described education as the key to nation building and manpower development. Dr. Jonathan also said that to liberate people from mental slavery, education must be the top priority of every government. The former president stated this on Saturday in Kaiama during a grand reception in honour of the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, by the people of his Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area. A statement by Governor Diri's Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted Dr. Jonathan as making reference to Singapore whose founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, succeeded in transforming his nation from Third World to First World through education. The Jonathan administration between 2011 and 2015 has the record of ...

Hamman Bello Ahmed, OFR: Maritime Living LEGEND of the Week

No other Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service has the record of achievements and bold policy plans that Alhaji Ahmed Hamman Bello Kojoli left. Nor can any other CG claim to have outperformed him given the limited time frame of less than ten months he was on the saddle. Regarded as a highly non political officer, he has the untainted record of professionalism, dedication and industry. Perhaps, Kojoli will best be remembered as that fine officer who was drafted to the Apapa Ports during the reign of container flying to arrest the situation. Leading a team of 28 smart officers, among who was retired DCG Julius Nwagwu, then CSC, Kojoli wasted no time in bringing the situation under control through strict adherence to due process. As Head of the Special Team, he helped...

FG To Integrate Blue Economy In ERGP * As NIMASA hosts maiden edition of African Day of Seas and Oceans As part of efforts to ensure the maritime industry plays a significant role in the growth of Nigeria's economy, the Federal Government has initiated steps to inject blue economy concept into its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP). While this can be seen as an avenue to correct the previous jettisoning of the maritime sector in national planning, the government also intends to setup a strategic Blue Economy committee under the leadership of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Alhaji Sabiu Zakari revealed this earlier today, during a ceremony to mark the maiden edition of Africa's Day of Seas and Oceans scheduled ...

NIMASA: A revolving door no godfather can shut

Business, Misc
By Pius Mordi In its 30-year history since the National Shipping Policy Decree 10 of 1987 set up the National Maritime Authority, over 12 substantive directors general have been appointed to head the agency that in August 2007 became the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). Within the period, about four people had run the agency in acting capacity. Invariably,  at less than 30 months actual time spent in office, it enjoys the unenviable reputation of having the highest turnover of chief executives among all agencies of the federal government. A common feature of the parastatal is that the number of its substantive directors general is directly proportional with the number of ministers of transport appointed over the period. Every new minister of transport always...

Poor Ship Financing: Nigeria May Lose Out From Africa’s $2.7trn Freight Earnings

Business, Misc, Politics
By YUSUF BABALOLA, Lagos Unless Nigeria’s shipping sector is resuscitated or over $100 million in the Cabotage Vessel Finance Fund (CVFF) is disbursed to ship owners who met the requirements, the country may lose out from the $2.7 trillion freight earnings, which is anticipated from Africa by the year 2020. According to report, about $2.7trillion freight earning is expected to come from Africa, with Nigeria ship owners not positioned to maximise the huge freight earning. The leading cause of losing out of the freight earnings is poor ship finance, which has led to inability of Nigerian ship owners to acquire vessels. Also, inability of ship owners to access the Cabotage Vessels Financing Fund (CVFF), a special fund set aside to aid indigenous ship owners has affected their busi...

El-Rufai Behind Termination of Atiku’s Intel Contract With NPA – Sugar

Business, Misc, Politics, Port News
A political associate of Atiku, Alhaji Muhammadu Abdullahi Sugar, has alleged that Governor Nasiru El-Rufai of Kaduna State is using the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to fight former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. Reacting to the news of the termination of Atiku’s Intels Nigeria Limited’s Boats Pilotage Monitoring and Supervision agreement entered with NPA, Sugar said the action was the “handiwork” of El-Rufai. He said the Kaduna governor used the NPA boss, Hadiza Bala Usman, to get at Atiku. There was no immediate response from El-Rufai’s spokesman, Samuel Aruwan. Sugar, in a phone interview with DailyTrust on Sunday said President Muhammadu Buhari might not be aware of the development, saying, “Intels is a legitimate company doing legitimate business based on agreement with...
