Marine and Blue Economy Minister, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola, will today in Abuja inaugurate a high powered ministerial committee as Nigeria pushes for a seat in the International Maritime Organization, IMO. The inauguration of the Committee is coming in the wake of calls by critical Stakeholders who have described the move as a waste of time and scarce resources. Although the terms of reference of the Committee was still skirchy as at press time, usually dependable sources at the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy told our correspondent that the the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Oloruntola Olufemi, would lead the Committee of "Wise Men" who have been given a marching order by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to return Nigeria to Category " C" of the IMO .Other members of the Commit...

Yet again, Nigeria seems set for another jamboree to the IMO Council election, going by indications from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola, who a fortnight ago hinted in far away Spain that Nigeria is set to give another shot at this third tier category of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Oyetola who spoke at an IMO organized parallel World Maritime Day in the Spanish capital said, "Our active participation in upholding key conventions such as Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and the International Ships and Port Facility (ISPS) Code reflects our dedication to ensuring safety of international shipping", insisting that "there has been no incidence of piracy in the last three years". But regrettably, Oyetola's assurance was devoid of any specific...

Between Brass and Agge Deep Seaport, Which is a Lower Hanging Fruit for Douye Diri? BY ASU BEKS .

The dream for a Deep Sea Port in Agge in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State is legendary and as old as the creation of the State. Every successive Administration in the State had toyed with the idea of a Deep Sea Port in Agge. From Late DSP Alamieyeseigha to the incumbent Gov Douye Diri, the need to construct this natural deep Seaport has always attracted traction as a legacy project that should be taken out of the drawing board. But if my memory serves me right, more often than not, these intentions have died up the moment the saliva which followed such pronouncements dried up. But to be fair to former Governor Seriake Dickson ,he should perhaps be singled out as the only occupant of CREEK HAVEN, who made the best of attempts to move from motion to movement when he commission...

Protocol. Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I send you my best wishes on this auspicious occasion of your Annual General Meeting. But before I proceed further, let me congratulate my inlaw and sister, Remi Itie and other contestants who emerge victorious at the keenly contested elections last night. We are happy that the elections were held in the most peaceful manner. I want to urge those who won to be magnanimous in victory . I urge Remi Itie and other members of the exco to stretch their hands of fellowship to other contestants in the over all interest of the League. Once again, accept my congratulations. In my opinion, today should be a day of stock taking on how the League has fared in the past 25 years. Has the League achieved the dreams of its founding fathers? Has the welfare o...

These are certainly not the best of times for the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency , NIMASA and its Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, Mr Jibril ABBA, considering the damning allegations made against him by an NSDP Vendor, , Messrs SPRINGDALE ACADEMY OF MARITIME EDUCATION & TRAINING TRUST(SAMET), India. Should NIMASA fail to act promptly, indications are rife that two legal actions ; one in UK and another in Nigeria for breach of contract might be filed against the Agency in a matter of days. Already , letters from two law chambers in UK and Nigeria have served a notice of a possible legal action for a breach of contract. In one of such letters of "Compaint and Demand" from Kunle Adegoke & co, a Lagos based firm of Legal Practioners , dated...

If the famed founder of the Synagogue Church of all Nations, Pastor T. B. Joshua, were alive, I would have mobilized the rank and file of Nigerian indigenous ship owners to his Church for a seven-day dry fasting to break this 18 years jinx that has made the disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) a mission impossible. Or maybe I should consider Rev. Fr. Mbaka or the maverick pastor Indaboski for this divine intervention which seems to be the only option left. If there is any indigenous group that has never benefited from any direct government bail out in the last two decades, it is the Nigeria ship owner. From the Obasanjo administration to late Yar'Adua, Jonathan and Buhari, various sectors of Nigeria's economy, including aviation, agriculture, energy, oil and gas...
