Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, was all smiles as he lavished encomiums on officers and Men of the Tin Can Command who rejected mouth- watering offers to make an iconic drug seizure to celebrate his first 365 days in office as helmsman of the Nigeria Customs Service. Adewale Adeniyi was named Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 19, 2023 , thus bringing to an end the Hameed Ali administration of ineptitude which will go down in history as the darkest days of Service. For the Tin Can command under the headship of Comptroller Dera Nnadi, Mni, this was more of a birthday present to Wale Adeniyi, the CGC than just men and officers carrying out their statutory duties as enforcement officers and revenue collectors. As Adeniyi revealed that a man hunt has begun for those who may have been the mastermind of this illicit trade worth over N4billion in drugs and banned narcotics, he was determined that the law will catch up with all those behind this crime.
In all, three containers were fingered as the couriers has one 40 feet containers in its bowels, 877 cartons of codeine and 82 cartons of illicit psychotropic substances. Adeniyi said the substances posed very severe danger to social health and well being of citizens and was fuel for the incidents of crime in our society.
The CGC blamed non state actors for the recent upsurge in the influx of illicit drugs , adding that intelligence at his disposal has revealed that unscrupulous elements within the rank and file of officers of the Service, terminal operators, port officials have been fingered in this unwholesome trade. He vowed that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration would leave no stone unturned to unearth the culprits.
