The Big Story: Kunle Oloyede, A Change Agent at Tin Can Island Port

History is replete with leaders who are called upon at times of crisis to take the gauntlet. Such challenges come with huge responsibilities and a trust factor.

It took the helmsman at Customs House, Hameed Ali ,wide consultations to arrive at the decision to deploy Comptroller Kunle Oloyede to the second most powerful area Command.

The task for a change of guard at the Tin Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service came at a time the incumbent, Compt MBA Musa, was taking the nation by storm. If MBA Musa was not clamping down on drug and arm traffickers, he was raking billions of naira monthly to the Federation Account. If it was on the strength of competence, performance and public perception, MBA Musa would have continued to hold sway as Area Controller. But ironically, the only Permanent thing in life is change.

For those of us who were present at the last WTO endorsed World Customs Day celebration which held at the board room of the Nigeria Customs Service, i knew it would only be a matter of days before this IT whizkid, Compt. Kunle Oloyede ,would be called upon for higher national responsibilities.

SHIPPING WORLD can report on good authority that the ICT Modernization Unit which Compt Kunle Oloyede headed was responsible for the various innovations the Nigeria Customs Service had introduced to improve trade facilitation and thereby shore up revenue collection across the various Customs formations.

No wonder Compt Oloyede and his team went home with a bag load of laurels, courtesy of the Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali. The ICT Modernization unit is responsible for ICT Modernization infrastructure of the Service. ” Beyond its day to day responsibilities, it is saddled with the task of innovating trade processes and procedures to enhance the user experience of stakeholders.

In the year 2021,this unit excelled by deploying and developing the following applications;VIN Valuation App,E payment emolument form,Web tracker , Smart Fast Track, Tariff Search and E Recruitment. ” These remarkable achievements in 2021added great value administratively and operationally to the Nigeria Customs Service and enhanced tremendously its productive capacity” , according to dependable Customs sources. NO surprise therefore, that when the need to introduce the VIN policy was adopted by the NCS management didn’t have to look far for a dependable and competent officer in the mould of Kunle Oloyede to take charge at the Tin Can Command where over 75 per cent of imported cars are routed. And from every available data, there’s no doubt that he is using his expertise as an ICT guru of repute to the advantage of the Service
