SHIPPERS COUNCIL SLASHES PORT CHARGES BY 34 PERCENT

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC, yesterday disclosed that it has slashed port charges by 34 percent thereby redirecting Nigerian bound cargoes hitherto diverted to ports of neighbouring countries. Speaking at the third annual Ministerial stakeholders meeting in Lagos, Executive Secretary of the Council, Mr. Hassan Bello said that the processing of further production is ongoing. Although, the Council was silent on the details on the reduction of port charges he, however said that the container cleaning fee that was collected by shipping firms from importers has been cancelled. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Thursday inaugurated two seagoing specialized security gunboats acquired in 2015 by the immediate past Comptroller-General, Abdullahi Inde Dikko, to boost Nigeria’s anti-smuggling capacity on waters. The boats were acquired towards the end of Dikko’s administration. The present Col. Hameed Ali (retd) led leadership, on assumption of office in 2015 abandoned the patrol boats, which procurement was approved on May 9, 2012 by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of the former President Goodluck Jonathan. The Nigerians had been cleared by the immigration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to journalists on Wednesday. The ministry said that out of 313 Nigerians confirmed for the first batch for evacuation today, 84 of them had so far been cleared and are expected to arrive Nigeria at 2:00pm local time.
