Chagoury, the 81-year-old Lebanese-Nigerian businessman and owner of the Eko Hotel, was previously convicted by a U.S. court in 2000 for money laundering. Despite his controversial past, his company has again been handed a major infrastructure contract of national significance. The terminal is part of a $1 billion concession agreement awarded by the Nigerian maritime company Nigerdock to Swiss shipping giant MSC Group, which will operate the port once construction is completed. ITB Construction and DEME Group have been contracted for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) work, with the project expected to be finished by 2028. The Chief Executive Officer of Maritime Media Limited and Convener of the Maritime Industry Merit Awards (MIMA), Elder Asu Beks, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to concession the abandoned floating dockyard owned by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), describing the asset as a “national embarrassment” after more than a decade of neglect. Speaking during a live interview on Arise TV on Tuesday, Asu Beks said the floating dock, valued at about N50 billion, was originally planned to be deployed at Okerenkoko in Delta State to support training activities at the Nigerian Maritime University. Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said the proposed Ondo Deep Sea Port will operate as a major hub for international trade, serving Nigeria and countries within the West African subregion. Aiyedatiwa disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja while receiving the revalidated licence for the port from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
