FG To Integrate Blue Economy In ERGP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* As NIMASA hosts maiden edition of\nAfrican Day of Seas and Oceans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of efforts to ensure the maritime industry plays a significant role in the growth of Nigeria’s economy, the Federal Government has initiated steps to inject blue economy concept into its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While this can be seen as an avenue to correct the\nprevious jettisoning of the maritime sector in national planning, the\ngovernment also intends to setup a strategic Blue Economy committee under the\nleadership of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation,\nAlhaji Sabiu Zakari revealed this earlier today, during a ceremony to mark the\nmaiden edition of Africa’s Day of Seas and Oceans scheduled for July 25th,\nyearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zakari, who was represented by the Director, Maritime\nSafety and Security, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Danjuma Dauda, noted that\nthe Ministry of Transport would play a key role in this Blue Economy Steering\ncommittee which is expected to develop a Blue Economy policy for the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated that the policy would be geared towards\nprotecting the marine environment in order to guarantee Nigeria’s economic and\nsustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, he noted that the Transport Ministry has also\nsetup an inter-agency committee to come up with implementation strategies for\nthe Blue Economy Policy and National Transport Policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Femi\nGbajabiamila stated at the ceremony that under his leadership, the House would\nbe committed towards national quest for the sustainable use, conservation,\nexploitation and exploration of Nigeria’s seas and oceans to maximize the vast\neconomic potentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gbajabiamila, who was represented by Hon. Linda Ikpeazu of\nOnitsha North and Onitsha South constituency, Anambra State, pledged that the\nHouse would be keen to enact laws required to engender the development of the\nnation\u2019s blue economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his welcome speech, the Director General, Nigerian\nMaritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside stated\nthat Nigeria must sustain its increasing population through wealth creation\nfrom the enormous blessings of the diverse organisms and ecosystems that are in\nthe oceans and seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reechoing the theme of the event, “Harnessing\nNigeria’s Marine Biodiversity for Accelerated Economic Growth”, <\/strong>Dakuku\nsaid; “This year’s celebration provides us with an opportunity to\ndeliberate on the exploration of the enormous resources embedded in Africa’s\nseas and oceans; and how to exploit them to our advantage as a nation towards\nour economic prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that the nation must develop an interest in\nthe conservation, exploration and exploitation of its marine biodiversity to\nenable it achieve sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Nigeria can achieve accelerated economic growth and\ndevelopment through the regulation, exploitation and protection of her marine\nbiodiversity through a comprehensive and articulated approach which will not\nnecessarily impact negatively on the environment”, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reassured that as a Maritime Safety Administration,\nNIMASA would remain committed to focusing its attention on formulating policies\nin tandem with the development of marine biodiversity towards enhancing\nNigeria’s economic growth in line with Government agenda on diversification of\nthe economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the head\nof the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita commended\nNIMASA for organizing the event which she observed was in-tandem with the\nrecommendations of the 2050 Africa Integrated Maritime Strategy  (AIMS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, the program was strategic to ensure a peaceful prosperous and integrated Africa for economic growth on the concept of Blue Economy and security of the continent\u2019s territorial seas and oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
