Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, will today, Thursday 25th July, in Lagos lead other stakeholders, including Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo- Ita, and key maritime industry players, to the opening of activities marking this year\u2019s African Day of Seas and Oceans. The occasion meant to highlight the potential and opportunities in the continent\u2019s vast maritime domain, is organised by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event in Nigeria, themed, \u201cHarnessing Nigeria\u2019s\nMarine Biodiversity for Accelerated Economic Growth,\u201d echoes the African Union\n(AU) subject for the 2019 African Day of Seas and Oceans, \u201cEnhancing Africa\u2019s\nRole in a Globally Binding Instrument on Marine Biological Diversity in Areas\nBeyond National Jurisdiction.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of the event, the host, Director-General of\nNIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, who is also Chairman of the Association of\nAfrican Maritime Administrations (AAMA), emphasised the need to dismantle\nnational boundaries that impede effective utilisation of Africa\u2019s vast marine\nresources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dakuku stated, \u201cThe importance of marine biological\ndiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction cannot be overemphasised,\nconsidering that Africa is greatly endowed with vast maritime resources and\nopportunities which must be harnessed for economic development and wealth\ncreation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dakuku further enphasised the essence of the event,\nwhile receiving the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral\nOladele Bamidele Jaji, in preparation for the African Day of Seas and Oceans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on the vital role of the Nigerian Navy, the\nNIMASA DG said without effective security it will be impossible to reap the\nbenefits of the marine environment. He identified shipwreck as a major\nchallenge of the Nigerian marine environment. But Dakuku said NIMASA was partnering\nwith the Hydrographic Survey Department of the Navy to isolate, chart and mark\nwrecks with the support of the Agency\u2019s Intelligence Information System, which\nhas the capacity to capture every area of the Nigerian maritime domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides Gbajabiamila, who is the Guest of Honour, and\nOyo- Ita, who is Chairperson, dignitaries expected at the occasion holding at\nEko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, include Permanent Secretary, Federal\nMinistry of Transportation, Sabiu Zakari, who is the Chief Host. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AU at its 22nd Ordinary Assembly declared 2015 to 2025\nas the decade of African Seas and Oceans, and July 25 as African Day of Seas\nand Oceans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt.
